Mother knows best, but what if you have to use an incubator?

5 Domestic Goose top tips from Colin Murton.

• Set eggs no longer than a week after laying as viability declines a bit every day

• Most incubators are designed to be indoors, they don't cope with huge variations of temperature

• Turn eggs at least twice a day, more if you can, to and fro, not round and round!

• Ramp up the humidity a couple of days before hatching so the gosling does not stick to the membrane

• Be patient, from the first signs of pipping to hatch can be up to 48 hours

For a breed to be standardised, it has to have proven to breed predictably for several generations. Many traditional breeds all over the world have been standardised in their own country. Class 11 — Coloured Call Ducks

The Call Duck is the smallest breed of domestic duck, weighing less than a kilo. What they lack in stature, they make up for in noise! Live shows can be really noisy and full of atmosphere. We have resisted the temptation to add an audio track to these pages.

The standard colours of Call Ducks are very specific: to succeed in showing you need correct colour genes as well as exceptional ‘type’ or shape. The following Call colours are standardised by the BWA and PCGB:

Class no 9 — Coloured Runner Ducks

Indian Runner Ducks are used on organic farms and vinyards for pest control; content in a large flock and not much given to flying, they are easy to manage. There is however, a huge following both in Europe and North America for showing Indian Runner Ducks. Including white, there are now fourteen standard colours in the UK, and several more in Australia and Germany. The Bali is a crested runner, but is judged separately from the runners.
