As birds may have been housed for several months, there is until 00:01 on 22 May 2025 during which, where necessary, previously housed birds can be released gradually to minimise welfare issues. Keepers with any welfare concerns about their birds should speak to their vet. Further information is available in the press release on GOV.UK.

If you fall within a Protection Zone or Captive Bird (Monitoring) Controlled Zone, you are still required to house your birds. Please check the disease control zones on our avian influenza interactive map to see what restrictions are in place and the biosecurity guidance available on GOV.​UK.

England is in an avian influenza prevention zone (AIPZ). By law you must follow these strict biosecurity and hygiene rules to stop bird flu spreading.

You may also be in a disease control zone or AIPZ where you must house your birds. Check what zone you’re in and follow the rules.

Principally the cases have been in large commercial enterprises, but there have been a couple of ‘backyard’ flocks.

"Make the boy interested in natural history," wrote Captain Scott from his tent in the Antarctic. He was talking about his son, three year old Peter Scott, whom he never saw again and who went on to found the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust and campaign against the hunting of whales. The son also designed the panda logo for the Wold Wide Fund for Nature and was its first chairman. David Attenborough called Scott the patron saint of conservation and he appears in this programme. Nominating him in studio is the adventurer Pen Hadow, whose father knew Scott and with whom he shared a nanny. The programme also features two of Scott's children, Dafila and Falcon, as well as some rarely heard archive.

From his early years as an arctic adventurer, Pen Hadow has developed into an ardent conservationist with the 90 North Foundation. He describes this programme as an enormous responsibility and wonders why Sir Peter Scott, the founder of Slimbridge, is not better known today.

• There have been further findings of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in poultry and other captive birds in Norfolk, the East Riding of Yorkshire and a further increase in the assessed risk of HPAI in wild birds and poultry.
• A regional avian influenza prevention zone (AIPZ) with mandatory biosecurity and housing measures has been declared in:

• the unitary authorities of the East Riding of Yorkshire
• the City of Kingston upon Hull
• all districts in Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Suffolk

• From noon on Monday 23 December 2024 all bird keepers in the AIPZ must keep their birds housed to protect them from bird flu. This applies to all kept birds in the area including pet birds, commercial flocks and just a few birds in a backyard flock.
• These housing and biosecurity measures are to mitigate the risk of further outbreaks of disease occurring.

• Housing measures also apply in any 3km Protection Zone in force surrounding an infected premises where HPAI has been confirmed in poultry or other captive birds.
• Keepers can check if they are in an avian influenza disease control or prevention zone using the Animal and Plant Health Agency’s (APHA) interactive map.
• Further information on the measures that apply in the zones can be found in Defra’s Bird flu: rules in disease control zones in England - GOV.UK guidance and the Bird flu: regional avian influenza prevention zone (East of England) - with housing measures - GOV.UK zone declaration available via the notifiable disease case finder on gov.uk.

• The risk of HPAI H5 in wild birds in Great Britain has increased from high (event occurs very often) to very high (event occurs almost certainly).

• The risk of poultry exposure to HPAI H5 in Great Britain:

• has increased from medium (event occurs regularly) (with low uncertainty) to high (event occurs very often) (with medium uncertainty) where there is suboptimal or poor biosecurity
• has increased from low (event is rare but does occur) (with low uncertainty) to medium (event occurs regularly) (with medium uncertainty) where good biosecurity is consistently applied at all times
