ADVICE FROM DEFRA ON BIRD GATHERINGS
Avian influenza (bird flu) - Bird fairs, markets, shows and other gatherings - Questions and answers

Can any gatherings take place?

A. Yes. From 20 December 2005 we are allowing gatherings of birds to take place under general licence. This includes sales, the racing of pigeons and falconry events.

What is general licensing?
A. Event organisers will no longer have to apply for a specific licence but must read a schedule of general licence conditions. These conditions are also available on request form local Animal Health Offices.

I have read the schedule of general licence conditions. Do I have to take any further action?
A. You will have to advise your local State Veterinary Service Animal Health Office in advance that the event is taking place and observe the biosecurity measures. Other relevant legislation will still apply.

Why have the rules changed?
A. The ban has been kept under review and following subsequent risk analyses, it is now considered appropriate for the ban to be lifted allowing shows, sales, falconry events and pigeon racing within the British Isles to go ahead under general licence.

Do I have to inform the local Animal Health Office of each gathering?
A. Yes, you will need to advise the local Animal Health Office that each event is taking place. The only exception is some types of falconry gatherings.
